The life, both professional and personal, of Ruth Bader Ginsburgnicknamed "Notorious RBG" by her biographers and followers, is presented. On the professional side, most of the focus on her career is as a lawyer and ultimately in only the second woman ever appointed as a Justice of the US Supreme Court, a position she still holds today at age eighty-five.

Much of that work centers on eliminating gender discrimination - both of females and males - under the law, many policies, especially implemented by privileged white men, inherently discriminating based on what are seen as stereotypical gender roles in society. Although seen as a liberal leaning justice, she is seen even more as a consensus builder among her supreme court colleagues.

It is in that role that she has formed an unlikely friendship with conservative leaning justice Antonin Scalia. That role of consensus builder changed when the balance in the court shifted radically to the right, she instead feeling compelled to voice her dissenting view to her colleagues in that continuation of the want for equality for all.

Her legal ferocity belies the fact of her diminutive physical stature and generally soft-spoken nature. On the personal side, she was married for over fifty years to fellow lawyer and law school colleague Martin D. On the Basis of Sex is a American biographical legal drama film based on the life and early cases of Ruth Bader Ginsburgwho was the second woman to serve as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

On the Basis of Sex received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised Jones' performance, the film's intricacy and its pacing at a dramatic level. Other critics felt the biopic was predictable, over-packaged and hagiographic. InRuth Bader Ginsburg is a first-year student at Harvard Law Schoolwhen her husband Martin Ginsburga second-year student, is diagnosed with testicular cancer.

She attends both her classes and his, taking notes and transcribing lectures while caring for Martin and their infant daughter Jane. Two years later, Martin's cancer is in remission and he is hired by a firm in New York City. Ruth petitions Harvard Law School Dean Griswold to allow her to complete her Harvard law degree with classes at Columbia Law School in New York, but he insists on following Harvard University policies at the time and denies her request, so she transfers to Columbia.

In spite of graduating at the top of her class, she is unable to find a position with a law firm because none of the firms she applies to wants to hire a woman. InMartin brings Moritz v. Commissionera tax law case, to Ruth's attention. Charles Moritz is a man from Denver who had to hire a nurse to help him care for his aging mother so he could continue to work.

The court ruled that Moritz, a man who had never married, did not qualify for the deduction. Ruth sees in this case an opportunity to begin to challenge the many laws enacted over the years that assume that men will work to provide for the family, and women will stay home and take care of the husband and children. She believes that if she could set a precedent ruling that a man was unfairly discriminated against on the basis of sexthat precedent could be cited in cases challenging laws that discriminate against women—and she believes that an appellate court composed entirely of male judges would find it easier to identify with a male appellant.

Ruth flies to Denver to meet with Moritz, who agrees to let the Ginsburgs and ACLU represent him pro bono after Ruth convinces him that millions of people could potentially benefit. After reading the draft of the brief, Dorothy Kenyonwho was cold to the idea at first, meets with Wulf in his office and convinces him to sign on. Department of Justice Attorney James H.

She does not ask the court to change society, but for the law to keep up with societal changes that have already taken place. To a judge's objection that the Constitution does not contain the word "woman", she responds vigorously that neither does it contain the word "freedom".

After frankly answering questions about abortion and discrimination at her Senate confirmation hearings, Ginsburg was confirmed by a vote of 96 to 3, which President Clinton notes was astounding given the partisan political environment of the time, let alone now. Among the landmark cases brought before the Supreme Court, the decision that allowed female cadets to enroll at the previously all-male Virginia Military Institute VMI is discussed at length.

Several female VMI graduates explain why the decision was important — for them personally, and in the larger struggle for women's rights. The film also chronicles Ginsburg's status late in life as a pop culture icon, starting with the publication in of Notorious R. Knizhnik and Carmon also started a Notorious R. Tumblr which gained a huge following and spawned merchandise such as T-shirts and coffee mugs.

The nickname is inspired by the "Notorious" honorific from the name of rap artist Notorious B. Ginsburg shows a good-natured embrace of her nickname, noting that she and the rapper have much in common: they were both born in Brooklyn. Ginsburg's granddaughter, who appears in the film, is a graduate of Harvard Law School. The film contrasts Martin Ginsburg's gregarious personality with Ruth's more stoic nature.

Ruth's children note that although their mother is a brilliant lawyer, she is an awful cook. Martin says that he refrained from offering his opinions on legal matters to his wife, and she refrained from cooking after their children complained about her lack of culinary skill. The film shows a playful side of the normally reserved Ginsburg.

She engages in jovial banter with arch-conservative Justice Antonin Scalia while acknowledging their love of opera was one of the few things they shared in common. Several commentators criticize disparaging remarks Ginsburg made about Trump during his campaign, noting that her comments made her vulnerable to claims of judicial bias in Supreme Court cases involving the Trump administration.

Ginsburg apologized for her remarks, and Senator Orrin Hatch opines that the formidable legal scholar is allowed to make occasional mistakes. The film notes the left- and rightward swings of the Supreme Court during Ginsburg's tenure. As the court has tilted in a conservative direction, Ginsburg's dissents from majority opinions have become more frequent and forceful.

Despite being in her eighties and having survived colon and pancreatic cancer, Ginsburg works relentlessly late nights and often gets only a few hours of sleep. She also is shown exercising at a gym with a personal trainer. When asked how long she plans to remain on the Supreme Court, Ginsburg responds that she will stay only as long as she is able to address the cases placed before her with the full ability and integrity of her lifetime of experience in practicing law.

Directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West had both previously worked on projects involving Ginsburg, [ 2 ] and in decided to make a documentary focusing solely on her. Inthe duo followed Ginsburg around to various meetings and speeches, including in Chicago and Washington, D. Following Ginsberg's death in Septemberit was announced the documentary, as well as her biopic On the Basis of Sexwould be re-released into 1, theaters, with box office grosses being donated to the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation.

The website's critical consensus reads, " RBG might be preaching to the choir of viewers who admire Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but it does so effectively. Scott of The New York Times wrote, "The movie's touch is light and its spirit buoyant, but there is no mistaking its seriousness or its passion. Those qualities resonate powerfully in the dissents that may prove to be Justice Ginsburg's most enduring legacy, and RBG is, above all, a tribute to her voice.
